When discussing quality of life in cities, the main focus should be directed not only at urban infrastructure and public spaces, but also at the conditions within homes themselves, including safety and decent living conditions, Deena Khalil, Senior Manager for Urban Policy, Research and Advocacy for the Middle East and North Africa region at "Habitat for Humanity International," said at an event titled "From Commitments to Impact - Joint Comprehensive Improvement of Quality of Life in Cities" held within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, Olaylar informs.
According to her, the perception of low quality of life in cities often begins precisely at the household level - through access to safe and decent housing, as well as basic services and social opportunities.
"A significant proportion of households spend a growing share of their income on housing - rent or mortgage payments, which reduces their ability to cover other basic needs and increases economic vulnerability," she stated.
Deena Khalil noted that this situation creates a sense of constant instability directly related to housing conditions - the risk of eviction, homelessness, and poverty.
"Poor living conditions, including lack of electricity and ventilation, also negatively affect health, education, and overall quality of life. All of this can further exacerbate the problems of housing overcrowding and reduced privacy, particularly for women," she added.
