Türkiye sees Zangazur corridor as direct land link with Azerbaijan and other Turkic states
13:35 EnTürkiye's influential newspaper Hurriyet has published an article about the area where the Zangazur corridor is expected to pass, Olaylar informs.
The article, authored by journalist Musa Kesler, highlights that the much-discussed Zangazur corridor will be located near the borders of Nakhchivan, Armenia, and Iran.
Kesler notes that the Zangazur Mountains-sharing the same name as the corridor and located within Armenia's territory-lie just 15-20 kilometers from the Azerbaijani city of Ordubad:
"From Ordubad, some mountain peaks are clearly visible. These mountains, stretching north to south, act as a natural barrier between Armenia and Nakhchivan. It's nearly impossible to cross them-except at a narrow plain called Mehri. During Soviet times, a railway line was built through this area. The railway and its tunnels still exist. If the corridor opens, the rail line will either be restored or a new one will be built along a similar route," he wrote.
The journalist emphasizes that Türkiye sees the corridor as a direct land link with Azerbaijan and other Turkic states in the region, making it of strategic importance.
"Iran opposed the project from the beginning. Armenia initially resisted as well, but later shifted its position with the mediation of US President Donald Trump. As a result, on August 8, Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan reached a preliminary agreement on the corridor at the White House, under Trump's mediation. The project was named the 'Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity'," Kesler reports.
The article also reflects the views of local residents in Ordubad regarding the corridor.
