Somalia identifies four priorities to improve building energy efficiency

Somalia intends to improve the energy efficiency of new buildings, modernize existing infrastructure, develop renewable energy, and introduce efficient cooling solutions, Ayan Harare, a member of Somaliachr("39")s Construction Steering Committee and the national coordinator for gender and climate change issues, said at the 4th Climate Week (CW4) in Baku.

According to Olaylar, Harare identified the adoption and enforcement of building codes and standards that set minimum energy-efficiency requirements for new buildings, taking into account the countrychr("39")s climatic conditions, as the first priority.

The second priority will be the renovation of existing and public buildings. According to Harare, following more than 30 years without full-fledged state governance, this issue is one of the countrychr("39")s priorities. She identified government buildings, schools, and hospitals as a starting point.

The third priority is electrification and the development of renewable energy. She noted Somaliachr("39")s significant potential for solar energy, while access to reliable and affordable electricity remains a challenge.

"The fourth priority is cooling. As temperatures rise, it will become increasingly important. We need energy-efficient cooling equipment, better building designs, and passive cooling solutions," Harare said.

She also said that Somalia is implementing its nationally determined contribution and national adaptation plan. At the same time, the country needs to build capacity to develop and enforce building standards.
