Elnur Soltanov: Share of renewables in Azerbaijan to reach 34% by end of 2027

Azerbaijan is among the most reliable partners in the system of maintaining energy security on both a European and global scale, Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Energy Elnur Soltanov said during a panel discussion at Baku Climate Action Week 2026 (BCAW 2026), Olaylar informs.

He noted that the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the total structure of the countrychr("39")s installed generating capacity should grow to 34% by the end of 2027.

Currently, this figure is at 21%. "The volume of energy production from renewable sources this year will almost double compared to last yearchr("39")s figures. The regionchr("39")s largest solar and wind power plants are already operating on the territory of the republic. Despite its relatively small area and economic scale, Azerbaijan strives to take the position of a regional leader in the sphere of the green transition," the deputy minister stated.

As Soltanov noted, the structure of greenhouse gas emissions in the republic generally coincides with global trends - about 70% of total emissions are generated by the energy sector, while industry, waste management, and the agricultural sector together account for about 30%.

He emphasized that the countrychr("39")s current energy balance is the result of a well-thought-out state policy: "The republic is seeing an increase in natural gas production with a systematic reduction in oil production. Natural gas, when used rationally, can become an effective mechanism for overcoming the global climate crisis. While oil is unlikely to fulfill such a function, gas certainly can. Throughout its history, Azerbaijan has held leading positions in the oil and gas revolutions, and currently acts as one of the key guarantors of the energy stability of Europe and the world as a whole."
