Ilham Aliyev: NAM, OIC and AU should be represented on UN Security Council
13:46 EnThe Non-Aligned Movement, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the African Union should be represented in the UN Security Council, President Ilham Aliyev said at the opening ceremony of the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum themed "The Mission of Media in Promoting Peace: Restoring Truth and Rebuilding Trust," Olaylar informs.
The head of state noted that reforms in the UN Security Council are regularly discussed:
"However, there are no results. As the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement, Azerbaijan has its own position on this issue and has proposed its own version regarding reforms. Because this should be comprehensive, at the level of representation. We believe that one of the permanent seats should be given to the chair of the Non-Aligned Movement on a rotational basis, and they should have veto power. Another seat should be allocated on a rotational basis to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, because Muslim countries are also not represented there. Another seat should be allocated to the African Union, and the chair of the organization during that period should be represented there. This would be a fair approach."
Ilham Aliyev emphasized that some countries are striving to become members of the UN Security Council:
"However, there should be certain criteria here as well. Population size and economic potential cannot be the criteria. In my opinion, there should be an inclusive approach here, the rotation principle will work, and members will change. But today, the majority of the UN Security Council does not change on a rotational basis. If this happens, we will have veto power. Otherwise, the UN will continue to lose its potential. It will remain outside of processes in terms of conflict resolution and international relations."
