Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan's relations with European Commission began to improve after Borrell's departure
10:49 EnDuring the tenure of former European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, relations between Azerbaijan and the organization had essentially gone to the brink of complete collapse, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said at the opening ceremony of the 4th Shusha Global Media Forum, entitled "The Mission of the Media in Promoting Peace: Restoring Truth and Rebuilding Trust," Olaylar informs.
The head of state noted that now certain corrupt individuals - former Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, were benefiting from a certain financial source:
"An Armenian oligarch supported him on matters related to Armenia. This entire anti-Azerbaijan group existed within the European Commission. We hope that Borrell has left politics once and for all. Since then, our relations have begun to improve. We particularly saw that there was a great need to restart relations on a mutual basis. We supported this. Over the course of several months this year, a number of visits were made from Brussels to Azerbaijan. In March, President of the EU Council António Costa came, then the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, and in July, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen came. In their public comments and in my statements, you can see that both sides are satisfied with the level of cooperation."
