About 90% of slum population lives in lower-income countries

Around 90% of the population living in disadvantaged urban areas worldwide resides in low- and middle-income countries, stated Claudio Persello, Professor at the University of Twente, at an event held within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, Olaylar informs.

He said these areas often remain invisible on official maps and in statistical reports. Traditional data collection methods based on household surveys are costly, and census data update cycles can take up to 10 years.

"The use of Earth observation technologies and machine learning makes it possible to create affordable maps with high update frequency," he said.

He added that the new approach will enable real-time monitoring of rapidly developing areas to provide accurate reports on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
