Lawyers in Azerbaijan to be allowed to defend themselves in court

Lawyers in Azerbaijan will be able to independently represent their interests in court, acting as defendants, Olaylar informs. 

The corresponding amendment is proposed to the Criminal Procedure and Civil Codes.

According to the amendment submitted for discussion at todaychr("39")s meeting of the parliamentary Committee on Legal Policy and State Building, a lawyer will be able to refuse a defense attorney and represent himself if: he or she is a military serviceman; is accused of committing a particularly serious crime; is detained or subject to a preventive measure in the form of arrest; is one of the defendants whose interests conflict.

According to the proposed amendment to the Civil Code, the same privilege will also apply to the cassation instance.
