Azerbaijan elected to chair UN bureau for first time

Azerbaijan has been elected to chair the UN Environment Program Committee of the Permanent Representatives (UNEP CPR) Bureau for the first time, Olaylar informs, citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.

Azerbaijanchr("39")s chairmanship of this organization will cover the years 2025-2027, and the leadership position will be held by the countrychr("39")s Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UNEP, Sultan Hajiyev.

UNEP CPR is the main permanent body of the UN Environment Assembly, which has 193 member states. It determines priorities on environmental issues at the international level. The CPR Bureau performs a number of important functions in the preparation of the Assemblychr("39")s decisions on global environmental policy and norms.

Cooperation between the UNEP and COP29 host Azerbaijan, which gained international prestige with its global activities and initiatives in the field of environmental protection and climate change, is developing dynamically.

The election of Azerbaijan as chair, as well as the confirmation as the host of the World Environment Day (WED2026) of UNEP in 2026, demonstrate the prospects of this cooperation.
