One of the most important tasks of Azerbaijani diplomacy during the presidency of Ilham Aliyev was the decision of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh based on the territorial integrity of our country, its sovereignty and irrevocability of our borders. As a result, on May 14, 2008, at the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly, an important resolution was adopted entitled "The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan". This fact once again confirmed that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh should be resolved within the framework of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. It should be noted that the success of Azerbaijani diplomacy allowed it to establish close ties not only with the UN, but also with other influential organizations, including the OSCE, the organization of the Islamic Conference, the Council of Europe, NATO, etc.

The final declaration of NATO summit, held in Lisbon on November 19-20, 2010, supported the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of the countries of the region, including Azerbaijan, and stressed the importance of resolving conflicts, taking into account these principles. Undoubtedly, all these and other very important issues entered the agenda of the Special Session of the UN General Assembly on December 3, 2020, initiated by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

Restoration of state borders and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan
